Daughter remembers holding her dying dad in her arms

WITH tears in her eyes, Hervey Bay's Debbie Cresswell recalled holding her dying father in her arms as they waited for an ambulance after he was hit by a car in the Pialba Woolworths car park on June 6 last year.

Ms Cresswell was in court on Tuesday as the driver of the car, Janice Mary Durrington, 77, pleaded guilty to the dangerous operation of a vehicle causing the death of Rex Wilson.

Durrington received a two-year suspended sentence and had her licence suspended for two years.

Outside the court, Ms Cresswell, supported by her brother Steven Wilson, recalled her final moments with her father, who was 81.

Ms Cresswell is haunted by the accident and says she often has flashbacks of seeing her father getting hit by the car and going over the bonnet.

He had been living with her for six months before the accident and was loved and respected by the community and his family, Ms Cresswell said.

She attends counselling sessions and suffers mood swings as a result of the trauma.

Both Ms Cresswell and her brother were frustrated by the sentence, which they feared would not be enough of a deterrent to other elderly drivers who should no longer be on the road.

"She can go home to her family - we can't go home to see our dad," Mr Wilson said.
