Event boosts respite dream

AFTER seven fundraising golf days, Pam Eather is still waiting to set up a home as a dementia respite centre.

Yesterday's annual golf day at the Warwick Golf Club, attracting 100 players, helped bring that dream another step closer to reality, and was made possible by sponsorship of $1500, mainly organised through suppliers of Wickham Freight Lines and local supporters.

Already the group has $250,000 in the bank for a centre.

Mrs Eather formed the Dementia Support Group, Warwick, after her husband Ken was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1991, and currently hosts fortnightly get-togethers at her home to help individuals, carers and families battling the illness.

She was part of the Slade Lives Again community group which this year put in an unsuccessful tender to the Southern Downs Regional Council to acquire Slade School.

"We were going to lease the old principal's residence on the northern side of Horsman Rd from the community group," she said.

With the council now in negotiations with Warwick Christian College about Slade School, Mrs Eather said she was unsure of her next move.

"If we can get a building or land, a half subsidy from government is available," she said.

"I have been told by staff at the Warwick Hospital and the Community Respite and Care Centre in Toowoomba that a Warwick respite centre would be full all the time."

The plan is to have a four-bedroom home set up as a respite centre.
