Family affair at squash finals
THE Erskine brothers from Goomburra played out the 2010 men’s grand final in the Warwick Rose Squash Club.
Neil beat his brother Nev in the final in three games.
To make finals night a real family affair, their mother Gay was in the ladies final.
Neil won his semi final in three straight games against Jim Costello while Nev came back after losing the first set to beat Mark Thomas in the other semi final.
Nev had a tough battle with Thomas in the second and third sets before winning in four sets to qualify for the final. The next two sets were close before Nev won.
The final between the Erskine brothers was a high standard match played at a cracking pace with Neil winning the first game 15-11.
The second game was played at the same pace with both players showing great skill before Neil won a tight game.
Nev came out with nothing to lose in game three and gave his best but older brother Neil was just too strong talking the game and match.
The womens was played as a round robin due to a small number of nominations with Gay Erskine and Yvonne Walters meeting in the final.
The final was of a high standard with Gay winning the first game which only fired up Walters to win the next three sets to retain the ladies championship.
In the A-grade plate final between two of the squash veterans, Ross Bell won the first and third games, Danny Lyons the second and fourth before Bell won the fifth 15-14. The B-grade final was played between Michael Campbell and Len Don, a newcomer to Warwick, who won in five games.
In the B-grade Warwick plate final, Mark Sinnott beat Eamon Cockram in straight games.
