Downs investment could lead to a boom in jobs
SLIGHT growth in Warwick's construction industry has Southern Downs leaders hoping for a jobs boom.
There were 151 dwellings approved for construction in Warwick in 2016-17 and Australian Bureau of Statistics data to December 31 shows there were already 88 new dwellings approved for construction halfway through this financial year.
Master Builders Association's Linda Rosengreen said there was some movement for Warwick and she was hopeful of continued growth.
"Warwick itself has been stagnant for a little while. The last report I heard however showed Warwick had picked up slightly," the Downs and Western regional manager said.
"We're starting to see some bigger industries come into Toowoomba and the Downs region. If you build it they will come."
A Southern Downs council spokeswoman said building inquiries had increased in recent months.
"All local builders have indicated business has increased. Both GJ Gardner Homes and Dixon Homes now have franchises in the region as do a number of renowned project builders," she said.
"Southern Downs Regional Council is proactively working to drive investment and attract more jobs and residents to the region.
"As a result, council is forecasting 1000 new jobs for the region in the next 18 months across the health and aged care, retail, renewable energy, transport and agricultural sectors.
"Due the success of the push for economic growth and residential attraction, council is working to ensure the region can reach these outcomes successfully and comfortably accommodate the population increase and the region's growth."
Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said the rise in results was a great outcome for the region and a trend expected to continue.
"Our region is emerging as one of the biggest growth areas in southeast Queensland," Cr Dobie said.
"Median house prices remain around $260,000 and the lifestyle and community amenities are first-rate.
"It makes sense people are choosing to move here. The Southern Downs is home to outstanding schools, job opportunities, access to major retail brands, international sporting facilities, beautiful natural resources and an enviable country lifestyle." - NewsRegional
