Dog lover shows off gentle giants

IT WAS barking mad at the Warwick Show at the weekend as hounds and their owners swamped the grounds.

Frank Newman brought three St Bernards to the Rose City to show off their magnificent form at the event.

Mr Newman showed nine-month-old pup Maestro, pictured, and said the judges were focused on a number of attributes.

"They look for presentation, composition, bone structure and how he moves," Mr Newman said.

He lives in Brisbane with the dogs, however their owners actually live in Melbourne.

Mr Newman shows them on a weekly basis.

"Every weekend we go to a show from Sydney, Melbourne, up the east coast to Bundaberg - all over the place," he said.

After nearly 30 years in the dog show industry, Mr Newman said he had a fair idea how to keep his animals in shape.

"You talk to them, and talk to them like humans, and they soon learn," he said.

"They get roused on like children too."

Mr Newman has been showing St Bernards for about 20 years and said it was their beauty and gentle nature that made him love them.

"They're very affectionate, I just love them."
