Lawyer finds the funny side of families disputing wills

THERE'S usually nothing funny about family inheritance disputes … unless you're Paul Brennan.

The Kawana lawyer has chosen the sometimes ugly topic as the subject for his latest book and decided humour was the best way to get his message across.

Hang On To It Girl - the Wily Woman's Guide to Wills is Mr Brennan's 10th book after decades of experience as a solicitor.

He started his first blog - 101 reasons to kill all lawyers - seven years ago as a humorous look at the wicked lives of lawyers.

Mr Brennan said humour was his natural way of raising awareness of issues.

"Inheritance issues are hilarious if they're someone else's," he said.

"But people need to exercise common sense when dealing with family wills and the best way to reach out to them is to keep it short and entertaining."

The book features cartoon illustrations, which Mr Brennan drew himself.

The comical depictions of the family breakdown contribute to the satirical feel of the book, while targeting a serious issue. Central to the book's theme is the issue that children are staying at home longer and longer.

The book has chapters dedicated to alcoholic sons and Kids In Debt Diligently Eroding Retirement Savings (KIDDERS).

"People have multiple kids and their kids all have their own lawyers and agendas," he said.

"Throw a few lawyers into the room and it's like putting a bomb in the room."

People are reaching their death beds before making cheap wills and by then it's too late.

Mr Brennan believes the issue is the person making the will doesn't care about it, but everyone else does.

"I see people forging signatures and then the next thing you know the carer has all the inheritance and the kids are left with nothing," he said.

"You see all kinds of skulduggery, but if the will isn't well documented then why not argue for your share of money?"
