The Australian Diamonds celebrate after winning the Constellation Cup.

THEY had some ups and downs during the season but the Australian netball Diamonds will still officially start 2018 as the No.1 team in the world.

The international federation has released its final ranking list for the year with the Diamonds retaining their position as top dogs.

New Zealand finishes the year with the No.2 spot despite besting Australia by 10 goals in a major upset in October in the Quad series.

The Diamonds struck back by clean sweeping the annual Constellation Cup series for only the second time.

England, who have shown big improvement in 2017, strengthened their third place position on the world ladder with a recent series win over Malawi.

Ladder movers include Northern Ireland who lifted into eighth spot and Scotland who have moved up a place to be in 11th position.

With a Quad series between Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa scheduled for early in the new year, these world rankings could alter prior to the Commonwealth Games.

At the Games on the Gold Coast in April, Australia has been drawn in pool A with Jamaica, South Africa, Barbados, Fiji and Northern Ireland.

Pool B will see matches between New Zealand, England, Malawi, Wales, Scotland and Uganda in the preliminary rounds.
