CUNNINGHAM CLOSED: Debris and smoke factors for closure

UPDATE 3.45PM: FIRE activity caused debris and smoke haze to affect the Cunningham Highway, according to QFES public information officer Kerry Cumner.

A large tree has fallen onto the side of the highway and blocked access.

Six crews are on scene attending to the fire and the highway is expected to reopen within an hour.

EARLIER: THE Cunningham Highway at Cunningham's Gap is closed due to heavy smoke haze.

Lanes were closed in both directions at around 2pm this afternoon.

There are no estimates as to when it may reopen, according to a spokesman from the Queensland Police Service.

A spokesman from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service said they'd received no further information regarding fire at the Gap, and the closest bushfire was located at Swanfels and Tregony.

Motorists travelling between Warwick and Brisbane are advised to detour through Toowoomba.
