Critical restrictions temporarily lifted in wake of fires

THE Southern Downs Regional Council has announced that critical water restrictions of 100L per person, per day, will be immediately and temporarily lifted for bushfire affected residents and some businesses in the Stanthorpe area.

Water restrictions will be lifted for residents and some businesses on town and tank water, and will continue until 5pm Wednesday, September 18.

Mayor Tracy Dobie said it was essential for health and safety reasons to provide bushfire affected residents and businesses with access to extended water for the recovery process.

"Council is very much aware that a large proportion of our community is suffering from the effects of the recent bushfires,” Cr Dobie said.

"We want to assist our community during the recovery process and do as much as we can to help them get back on their feet.

"This decision to lift restrictions will allow residents and businesses to wash down roofs where applicable and attend to other issues such as washing clothes and removing ash.

"The water restrictions amnesty period is effective immediately and the critical water restrictions will be reintroduced from 5pm on Wednesday, September 18.”

The areas of eligibility will be primarily the bushfire impacted areas of Stanthorpe and Applethorpe plus the areas surrounding Ballandean.

If you are unsure whether you reside or trade within the amnesty areas, please phone the council on 1300 697 372 for more information.

Council reminds residents that water conservation is everyone's responsibility.
