Council steps in to help YMCA
A DECISION by Southern Downs Regional Council to extend a water main to the Stanthorpe YMCA will enable it to proceed with improvements to the facility.
The Stanthorpe YMCA had been successful in gaining funding for improvements to the old indoor cricket area to break up the space into multiple rooms.
Mayor Peter Blundell said as part of the building approval process, a review of the facility's firefighting ability had identified that a hydrant system was required to be installed.
He said without it, the facility upgrade would not be able to proceed.
"As the YMCA building is council-owned, and in consideration of the Stanthorpe YMCA's situation, it was deemed to be reasonable that council fund the water main extension works, which will, however, come at a significant cost of $21,900," Cr Blundell said.
"This work will need to be funded from council's contingency fund within the capital budget."
