THE South Burnett Regional Council has commission a landscape and design company to map out plans for a Kingaroy revitalisation project.

JFP Urban Consultants will draft a design for public works that will take in Haly, George, Kingaroy, Alford, Short, Markwell, Youngman and Glendon streets, and the Rail Corridor.

The initial plan is to close off part of Glendon St and extend the nearby carpark and Town Hall forecourt.

Mayor Keith Campbell said the project was in its early stages.

"The area incorporates the construction of a new carpark off George St linking into the King St parking area,” Cr Campbell said.

"The design of the revitalisation project will feature Glendon St as a meeting point and the Kingaroy Town Hall forecourt will blend in with the Glendon St carpark.

"We'll lose parking spaces in Glendon St and they'll be made up in the King St parking area.”

It will include reviewing elements within the road corridor such as roads, kerbs, footpaths, landscaping, pedestrian crossings, pram ramps, traffic movements, road medians, signage, lighting and open space furniture.

Glendon St may close to traffic entirely, or revert to one-way.

The council has budgeted $4 million over two years and will supplement this investment with state and federal grants.

"It will be staged over a number of years as it's a big experience all in one go,” Cr Campbell said.

He said the Kingaroy CBD was in need of a facelift.

"The reality is the CBD of Kingaroy has grown quite tired and old fashioned and there is a need for the town to be revitalised to bring back an element of pride and beauty,” Cr Campbell said.

"It is important for residents that their town is presented in an attractive manner and essentially important with tourism being a big feature of our economic drive that people have a lasting memory of Kingaroy's appearance that is positive.”

The draft plans will open for public consultation in April next year.
