Community achievers up for awards

THE Granite Belt community has many residents achieving great things every day, but one group and one individual are up for a chance to be honoured for those achievements.

The Southern Downs Mountain Biking Club has been nominated for the DSS Law Community Group of the Year Award in the 2018 Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

It was trail coordinator Nick Nelson's partner Jolene McLellan who nominated the club which he said the club was very humbled by.

"We don't do it for public recognition, we do it for a means for getting a few people together and going riding,” he said.

The club has been the spearhead behind mountain biking trails on Mount Marlay with five of the seven planned trails now open. Although the trails are being built by professionals, members of the club have played a huge part in building and maintaining the tracks.

"Without the help of the volunteer 'trail fairies' we wouldn't be where we are today,” Mr Nelson said.

"We'd still be scratching around in the dirt on some of the first trails.

"The volunteer members have been instrumental on the building and formation of all the trails and it's great to have the community resource we can pull on.”

He believed the volunteering aspect of the club was part of the reason they were nominated for the award. However he said the main purpose of the club was to encourage members of the community to get out and get some exercise.

"Stanthorpe being such a small town it sort of opens up a different avenue for people who might not be into big team sports they might have a different skill set,” Mr Nelson said.

"It opens up an avenue for them to participate in.”

Alongside the Southern Downs Mountain Biking Club, Bob Townshend has been nominated for the Australia Pacific LNG Community Hero Award.

Mr Townshend has been nominated for his role of Town Crier in the Southern Downs since 2007 along with his membership in the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers.

Mr Townshend volunteers at various tourist events including historical train tour as well as festivals such as the Apple and Grape.

Both nominees will find out if they were finalist or winners at an Awards Gala on Friday, November 30.
