Colts duo battle for awards
COLTS pair Alex Costello and Brendan Iles have won Condamine Sports Club Player of the Week awards in Warwick cricket in the past fortnight.
Costello took five wickets for Colts with his leg spin in the final round before the competition was split into A-grade and reserves.
On Sunday, two catches, three wickets and 23 runs enabled Colts all-rounder Brendan Iles to win with 113 points from RSL Diggers all-rounder Brett McEvoy on 108 points.
The awards are based on one point a run, 20 points a wicket, run out (thrower) or wicket-keeping dismissals and 15 points a catch in the field.
Both Costello and Iles win $50 open orders at the Condamine Sports Club.
Iles has been in the best cricket form of his career.
He won a second successive all-rounder of the carnival award at the recent Australia Day Cricket Carnival and has played a major role in the Colts move up the competition table.
At the start of January, Colts were looking down the barrel of a bottom-three finish and being placed in reserve grade for the final round and the finals series.
But a winning streak has not only put the side in A-grade, Colts are now second on the table.
If they stay in the top-two, Colts will have a double finals chance.
In the first two weeks of the finals, the bottom teams will be eliminated if games are washed out, so there is plenty of incentive for teams to finish in the top-two.
Fixture games will be played in the next fortnight before the start of three weeks of finals.
Grand finals in both grades are on March 17 with March 24 a reserve day for wash-outs.
Awards are based on one point a run, 20 a wicket, dismissal or run out, and 15 for a catch.
