City girls hold nerves to claim title
SERIAL finalists and winners Ballandean have had to hand the Ladies trophy over to Stanthorpe City after the girls in orange upset the minor premiers and defending champs on Saturday.
It was the first City Ladies win for several years in the competition, but they didn't get there easily.
Playing into the breeze in the first half, Ballandean created a slew of few chances down the right wing through Ally McLellan.
Despite McLellan's best efforts up and down the flank, the all important final touch wasn't there.
A goal-mouth scramble would eventually lead to the opening goal, with Ballandean's Richelle Reardon capitalising on some sloppy defence to find the back of the net.
The second half belonged to City.
Determined to fight their way back, City utilised striker Katy Lee's pace up top to try find their opening goal.
Ballandean's defence worked over time and it looked like they were going to sneak the win, but their was still time for some drama. With barely thirty seconds left in ordinary time, City received a free kick. With wind and a bit of luck, the ball went firing into the top of the net to level it up. Into extra time and City continued their dominance.
Katy Lee continued to be a threat and her hard work would pay off after she was awarded a penalty after being brought to the ground.
Youngster Georgia Williams kept her nerves in check as she slotted home. Ballandean continued to rally but were out on their legs and out of ideas.
City lifted the trophy for the first time in some years.
