Centenarian's special Barefoot night out

IT'S a production that has given so much joy and despair to centenarian Agnes McKechnie - but on Sunday night it was all about happy memories.

Not since 1969 has Barefoot in the Park been in the spotlight locally. Agnes and first husband, Jack Boucher, had adapted it from the 1963 comedy written by Neil Simon and it was due to be the couple's masterpiece.

The night before the premiere Jack was killed in a tragic accident. But, as the saying goes - the show must go on - and it did, to rousing reviews. Forty-nine years later and Agnes was sat front row surrounded by family and friends for Sunday's rendition.

Son, David Boucher, who was nearly 15 when shock befell his family in '69, said it was a watershed moment for the family. "A very special night considering it's 49 years since mum and dad put it on. It's a very special memory for the whole family and it was pretty amazing to have mum there given she's now 100.5 (years old).

"She sat there and enjoyed the whole thing. Afterwards when we went home we said to her do you want to go off to bed but she said 'No, no, no lets have coffee'. Then she just wanted to chat all the aspects of the show.

"It really brought out some great memories for her.”
