AFTER more than 28 years of commitment to the Southern Downs, former MP Lawrence Springborg will be celebrated at a special evening in his honour.

The evening of Saturday, March 17, will get under way with drinks and canapes at the art gallery before filtering across to the civic centre for a special testimonial dinner.

Invitations have been sent out, but people can register an interest for tickets to one or both events by visiting www.trybooking.com or phoning 0407 137 041.

Southern Downs Regional councillor Vic Pennisi said it's important Mr Springborg's contribution to the region was honoured.

"This is about Lawrence and recognising the contribution he's made in the last 28 years to Southern Downs and Queensland.

"It's not just a Stanthorpe function - it goes further than that.

"It should be a fitting recognition of what he's done for us over time,” he said.

"Would there be anyone who would of given us better representation than Lawrence?

"He's the most popular Premier that never was. That's really sad because he's got a level-head, very fair and integrity is second to none.

"He made a decision (to retire) and we respect that and we just want to put something together that is fitting,” Cr Pennisi said.

Drinks start at the gallery from 5pm and is $30 per person. The gala dinner will kick-off at 6.30pm and is $120 a head.
