Caves Rd bat problem tackled

RESIDENTS in the vicinity of Caves Rd were grateful for a 4.30am wake-up on Tuesday - it meant something was being done about a problem that was sending them batty.

A colony of bats has been roosting in the Caves Rd area for several years, causing havoc in the neighbourhood by creating noise and destroying trees.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said that in previous years she wasn't aware anything had been done about the colony.

"I'm absolutely happy,” she said.

"I'm all for them being relocated.”

Residents were given written notice Southern Downs Regional Council would perform flying fox pest management on February 22.

The unnamed resident missed that notice, but was grateful for a social media alert.

"If I wasn't aware of it I'd be upset,” she said.

"We took care of our pet to make sure he wasn't going to be affected.”

Pyrotechnic devices similar to small fireworks were used to scare off the bats.

Under state legislation all management of flying fox roosts must be ecologically sustainable.

This means no roost trees are allowed to be destroyed, no lethal harm is allowed to be done to the bats and all management activities must be conducted in the early morning or early evening.
