Cannabis dealer released on parole

A 47-year-old Bundaberg drug dealer, who grappled with his own addiction for 30 years, has been released on parole after being found guilty of trafficking cannabis.

Mark James Mason was arrested in November 2011 when police officers found 21 small bags of methamphetamine on his property during a drug raid.

Brisbane Supreme Court heard on Tuesday how Mason told police it was for his personal supply, but conceded he sold cannabis to pay for his methamphetamine habit.

The court was told Mason fronted court for the first time on drugs charges at age 17.

Splitting the methamphetamine into smaller portions was a way to control his consumption.

Mason pleaded guilty to a list of charges including trafficking cannabis between August and November 2011, possessing drugs and pipes and obstructing police.

On Friday Mason stood in the dock with both arms behind his back - his left hand gripping his right wrist, his right hand clenched.

"It seems to me you are at a high level risk of offending," Justice George Fryberg told Mason as he read out the sentence.

"You have a chance to put 30 years behind you and turn your life into something enjoyable and worthwhile.

"This will be your effective last chance.

"If you breach parole, there is very likelihood you will go straight back to jail."

Justice Fryberg said he had to impose a strong deterrent for the charges but balance that with the 521 days Mason had already spent locked up.

"It seems to me that balancing requires you to be released immediately on parole."

Mason's hands relaxed.

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, to be released on parole immediately.

Mason is expected to return to Bundaberg to live with his brother.

An appointment has been arranged for Mason to meet with a drug rehabilitation group on his arrival.
