Budget delivers lowest rate rise in a decade

STRUGGLING ratepayers will have longer to take advantage of discount payment periods, according to the 2019-2020 Southern Downs Regional Council budget released today.

Residents will have 60 days to pay and receive a 7.5 per cent discount, up 30 days from the previous financial year.

Rates will rise two per cent for the lowest rate rise since the amalgamated council's formation in 2008.

Councillor Neil Meiklejohn said the budget considered the impact of the continuing drought conditions on rural ratepayers.

"This is the most significant initiative as part of the budget,” he said.

There will be no increase to utility charges for water, sewerage and waste which will remain at 2.75%.
