Brisbane hit by hail and strong winds

Brisbane hail storm damage bill almost $500m

THE hail storm that devastated chunks of Brisbane last week is close to costing insurers half a billion dollars.

The freak storm has prompted almost 70,000 insurance claims including 17,509 for home and contents, and another 51,472 for vehicle damage, according to the Insurance Council of Australia.

The total damage bill now sits at $482 million.

ICA chief Rob Whelan said quotes were already being handed out so repairs could begin as soon as possible.

"This process depends on keeping the communication open with residents and car owners, and we urge them to contact their insurer if they have any queries about the claims process, assessments and rebuilding time-frames," Mr Whelan said.

Those who are not sure about what company insures them or have concerns or questions about the process can phone the Insurance Council's disaster hotline on 1800 734 621
