Brandis urges AFP to investigate Craig Thomson allegations

SHADOW attorney-general George Brandis has written to the Australian Federal Police asking it to investigate claims Craig Thomson was offered a lucrative deal to stand for Labor pre-selection in Dobell.

In an interview with News Ltd the Labor discard confirmed he was re-contesting Dobell as an independent.

He also revealed he had turned down an offer from the ALP to contest and lose the pre-selection ballot in Dobell, making him eligible for a payout worth up to $100,000.

It sparked a fiery start to proceedings in the lower house on Thursday, with the Opposition failing to suspend standing orders to give Mr Thomson an opportunity to explain the allegation in the story.

NSW Labor general secretary Sam Dastyari then took to Twitter to deny the claims, writing: "Craig Thomson's membership of the Labor Party was suspended a year ago. You can't contest a preselection if you are suspended."

But this denial did not stop Senator Brandis from calling a press conference to tell reporters he had written to AFP Commissioner Tony Negus asking him to "investigate the matter urgently".

"This is a very serious allegation indeed," Senator Brandis said.

"I think Mr Thomson should elaborate the allegation he makes."

When asked about the matter later in the day, Leader of the House Anthony Albanese and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus each described the Coalition's behaviour as a "stunt".
