BOOK: Daddy's OK
AUTHOR: Dean Mason
PUBLISHER: New Holland
IN May, 2011 Michael Fox made a protest against the family law and child protection system.
This event and other family disputes broadcast in the media motivated Dean Mason to write this book.
He focuses on the true experiences of 14 men who are living through separation or divorce.
He has gone through these experiences himself and was elected National Chairman for Dads In Distress Support Services in 2010.
Their stories will highlight the lack of help available to men.
The priorities of the Australian Office for Women are to reduce violence against women, increase economic security and ensure equality in society.
He proposes an Office for Men be established to reduce male suicide, increase mental health security and ensure equality in the family.
This should not become a gender-based debate and men and women must both own their responses and responsibilities.
"Fatherlessness" is one phenomenon that is topical.
If fathers are to play a role in addressing the various problems associated with children affected by this then maybe the current legislative and policy framework around separation and divorce needs to be scrutinised.
A more interventionist form of counselling, offering tools and support, and proper recognition of a father's place in children's live might resolve some of these concerns.
It would certainly help them be finer fathers and co-parents.
