Bonwick boys burn up track
THERE is no questioning that the Bonwick family know their HQs, with dad Kevin fine tuning the engines and son Gary burning rubber on the track.
The team returned from Perth on Monday after Kevin competed in the Australian National Holden HQ Championships and placed third over-all against 47 other racers from across the country.
“It felt great to get that result, I have never been to Perth before to race and never raced in the car I competed in,” Gary said.
“On Saturday morning before I started my first race it was the first time I had seen the track and the car.”
Starting racing 15 years ago after being raised in a motorsport family in Warwick, Gary said it was the obvious step for him to get behind a wheel.
At the event he impressed the crowd in the 1973 HQ with his time of 1.06 minutes over the 2.5 kilometres – the fastest on the track.
“I was pretty stoked about that after never racing there before,” he said.
After five races over Saturday and Sunday Gary had the fastest lap four times in the qualifying heats.
His racing career has been a great success after winning the nationals twice in 2007 and 2008 followed by second place last year.
Attending Bathurst last year in the Holden HQ section he also placed first and was the state champion from 2005 to 2007 and is leading the pack this year with only one more meet later in the year.
The motorsport tradition in the Bonwick family has continued onto Gary’s son Keiren who is the 2009 dirt track cart racing champion at his Lockyer Valley club.
Gary, with his dad Kevin as support, will race again at Morgan Park soon.
