Boat with 79 asylum seekers intercepted Sunday night

A BOAT carrying 79 asylum seekers was intercepted north-north-west of Christmas Island on Sunday night.

It came as the Coalition stepped up pressure on the government to reintroduce temporary protection visas.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison plans to introduce a bill this to restore restore TPVs, which were a feature of the Howard government's asylum seeker policy.

"Five years ago Australia had a full suite of strong border protection policies that stopped the boats. Just four people were in detention who had arrived by boat. Today there are around 12,000," Mr Morrison said on Monday.
