Mining trades assistant dies in Capricorn Highway crash

A BILOELA man who was killed in a crash near Duaringa on Sunday had overtaken a B-double truck when his left-hand wheels hit loose gravel, authorities said.

The man, who Duaringa Police Station boss Sergeant Paul James confirmed was 43-year-old mining trades assistant Jonathan Hill, was travelling west on the Capricorn Hwy on Sunday afternoon.

Forensic Crash Unit's Sergeant Michael Hollet said about 3km from the Woorabinda turnoff, Mr Hill overtook a B-double that was travelling at 90kmh.

Sgt Hollet said when Mr Hill merged back into his lane, he veered his Ford Laser too far onto the left-hand-side of the road.

The vehicle hit loose gravel and slid into a tree.

Sgt Hollet said Mr Hill was not speeding but he was travelling at a speed where he could not regain control of his vehicle.

His car was towed to a holding yard in Duaringa.

A post mortem on Mr Hill will be carried out in the coming days.
