Biking cold start to paramedics' long charity ride

THEIR alternative footwear of rubber thongs was of little help to the cyclists on the Pedal4Paramedics fundraising tour, who arrived in Stanthorpe on Sunday night.

They woke to the first frost of the season and so a stop at the Big Thermometer was needed.

The 60km ride from Warwick the day prior was deliberately shorter as most of it was uphill but Monday's 110km ride to Inglewood was "downhill all the way”.

Organised by Oakey's Glenn Preston, the event had run twice before and this year involved eight cyclists pedalling 620km over eight days, starting in Toowoomba and taking in Stanthorpe before heading west.

The group, which claims to be only social cyclists, includes a police officer, nurse, teacher and ex-defence force member, along with several civilians.

So far $16,500 has been raised for the Queensland Ambulance Service Legacy scheme, which assists paramedics and their families with the costs of education after a member is killed or injured.

Mr Preston said the idea for the ride came about in 2012 when he arranged an impromptu event to assist paramedic Jamie Jackway, who became paraplegic after falling out of a helicopter in a rescue off the coast of Townsville.

That ride stretched from Brisbane to Townsville and took three weeks but Mr Preston still thought "we need to do more”.

As he "enjoyed the cycling aspect of it”, he decided to formalise the event as Pedal4Paramedics.

Donations and riders are welcomed for future events. See www.qaslegacy.org.
