Big bird answers to a new name
THE famously large chicken best known for its appearances sitting atop the Stanthorpe Poultry Club's Apple and Grape Harvest float will no longer be known as the Big Chook.
In the lead-up to the club's auction day on Sunday, poultry club canteen convenor Loretta Williams and the committee decided it was time for the Big Chook to have a real name.
So Mrs Williams started a Facebook competition seeking inspiration for a name that suited the feathered celebrity.
The post attracted a number of suggestions including Butch, Nuggets and Charlie.
However the final decision about the name came down to the creator of the well-known chicken, Julie Rappo.
And the winning name went to Rachel Johns from the Bangalow Poultry Club with the suggestion of Stan - as in Stanthorpe.
Mrs Williams said as the oversized chicken had been born and bred in Stanthorpe, Stan was certainly an appropriate name.
