Best of youth recognised

WHEN she started volunteering, Bianca Fitch didn't expect anything in return.

But her hard work helping to co-ordinate youth events in the Rose City hasn't gone unnoticed and she was awarded Community Volunteer of the Year and Young Change Maker at last year's Warwick National Youth Week Awards.

Miss Fitch said it was time for the efforts of other local youths to be recognised with nominations open for this year's event.

"If people see young people doing something good, just fill out the form," she said.

"Youths don't always get recognised for what they do."

Miss Fitch said she was happy to be honoured at last year's event but for her the real reward was the fun she had and the skills she learnt.

"I have always been interested in volunteering, it's something you can really get into," she said.

"I have learnt leadership and a lot more organisation."

People aged 12-25 years can be nominated for various awards in a wide range of categories including sport, employment, music and community.

Southern Downs Regional Council community youth worker Bonita Tyler said the nominees and winners would be celebrated at an awards night at Town Hall on April 19.

"Each year we see hundreds of young people volunteer to help with youth and community projects across the Southern Downs and it is great to see some of those people recognised for the time they give our community," Ms Tyler said.

"We would like to encourage everyone to think about a young person who has made a difference in their workplace, sport or community from April 2011 to April 2012."

She said supper would be provided at the free awards night and certificates handed out to all nominees.

Nominations are available on the SDRC website, from Town Hall Youth Office or the council and close at 5pm, March 12.

Phone Bonita Tyler on 4661 7166 for more information.
