Bennell on Lyon: 'I couldn't thank him enough'

HARLEY Bennell has thanked Fremantle coach Ross Lyon for having the confidence in him to return this season.

Bennell will run out for his first game for the Dockers on Sunday against Richmond. It's been 720 days since his last senior appearance for the Gold Coast in 2015.

The brilliant albeit injury-prone half-forward has been plagued by calf issues since returning to his home state.

"I wasn't going to quit, but I was going to sit out for the rest of the season," Bennell told the Fremantle website.

"But I sat down with Ross and went through a few things and I'm just happy I didn't put the boots away for the season."

Lyon has constantly backed his star recruit, despite a number of off-field issues.

"I've had Ross in my corner from day dot, which has just been the best for me," Bennell said.

"He backs me in and believes in me, so I couldn't thank him enough."

Bennell has been given the green light to return to AFL ranks after making it through four WAFL hit-outs unscathed.
