Australia Day triathlon motivates Costanzo

Triathlon: When Jenny Costanzo started doing triathlons she could barely swim a lap. Now entering her fifth Australia Day Triathlon, she holds the title for the fastest time in Open Ladies.

Costanzo completed the 400m swim, 10km bike ride, and 3.5km run in 48 minutes and 56 seconds last year but insists the only person she is racing is herself.

"It's a great little community event, it's really fun, very approachable, there's no winners or losers on the day," she said. "(Having the fastest time) feels really great, it's a really good achievement."

She said she didn't have any particular regime to prepare for the event.

"I tend to just use it as motivation to keep me running, cycling and swimming through summer," she said.

"I have never been a great swimmer, I decided to get into triathlons to improve my swimming.

"It definitely has worked, when I started triathlons I could barely swim a few laps."

With the Australia Day Triathlon now in its seventh consecutive year, co-organiser Michael Smail is expecting another great turnout.

"We had somebody come from Kingaroy last year," Smail said.

Last year more than 120 participated in the event. Smail said many people who entered the Stanthorpe Triathlon went on to compete at other triathlons around the country.

"It's a taste for the real deal," he said. "It's been very successful and everybody just comes and has a lot of fun.

"It's mainly to get people into triathlons so they can have a go and try it out."

The under-12s triathlon consists of a 100m swim, 4km bike ride and 1km run. There is a swim/run-only option available as well.
