Ashbygate ended Inge Slipper’s IVF dream

INGE Slipper has revealed she was planning a third treatment of IVF before the James Ashby affair shattered her family plans

The wife of the former Speaker and Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper, said the couple were prepared to give it "one last go".

"I was in a good state of mind and thought we would try again,'' Mrs Slipper said. "Then that same day the news came through (that James Ashby had laid charges of sexual harassment against Mr Slipper).

"I was in no state to continue, it was extremely hurtful.''

The couple, who married in 2006, have no children although Mr Slipper has two children from a previous marriage.

Mrs Slipper, who is 45, admits it might now be too late to have a baby.

"I'm not a spring chicken anymore.

"I still have my good days and bad days."

She has not ruled out fostering, but said she is also nursing the idea of a political career of her own.

"I have lived and breathed politics for the last eight to nine years, it is something we have spoken about," Mrs Slipper said.

"But a few things got in the way, particularly Ashbygate.

"From my point of view, I would want to do the best job I could. Being around politics as long as I have, it is incredibly frustrating, all the games and stupid little asides.

"I have asked myself so many times whether I could put up with that. Everybody goes to Canberra with great intentions, but they get sucked into the system.''

Mrs Slipper said James Ashby's lurid accusations did not damage the marriage.

"We've always had a strong marriage," she said.

"I got married at 38. I was a late starter, I knew the type of person I wanted to marry."
