ARIA Charts celebrates 30th anniversary

THE Australian Recording Industry Association's ARIA Charts celebrates its 30th anniversary today.

When the charts, which officially record the highest selling singles and albums in Australia, were launched on July 10, 1983, the King of Pop Michael Jackson was ruling the world with his seminal album Thriller.

But the ARIA Charts did not become the country's official music chart until June, 1988, taking over from the Kent Music Report.

Irish rockers U2 hold the title for the most number one albums, 11, starting with 1984's The Unforgettable Fire.

Aussie pop star Kylie Minogue ties with Madonna for the most number-one singles with 10 chart-topping songs each.

Domestically, Jimmy Barnes has had the most number-one albums, nine, while Delta Goodrem comes second to Minogue with eight number-one singles.

Signaling the rise of digital music sales and the popularity of iTunes, a digital track chart was introduced to the ARIA Charts in April, 2006.

As of today's 30th anniversary, the country's current number-one album is Aussie hip-hop duo Bliss N Eso's Circus In The Sky and the number-one single is Swedish house music producer Avicii's Wake Me Up.
