Arena envy helps drive huge Stanthorpe campdraft

HUNDREDS of riders had to be turned away from this weekend's campdraft, as crowds line up to use the new arena.

Organisers have confirmed a full event with 800 first runs will go ahead.

"I've got about 250 people that we can't fit in, because we don't have enough time, space or cattle,” Stanthorpe Campdraft subcommittee secretary Paula Boatfield said.

Mrs Boatfield said despite the drought, graziers had donated about 1200 cattle.

"We've been very lucky...we've got enough cattle at the moment to put on a draft - and the full draft. We haven't had to cancel any events,” she said.

"We're very grateful to the cattle donors for helping us out that way, given the conditions in the district.”

The event this weekend will be the second major event held at the new arena.

"The good reputation of that campdraft arena has got out in campdrafting circles, so that's another reason why we've got so many people wanting to run on our ground,” she said.

"We've got a beautiful, brand new arena that is a pleasure to run on.”

The campdraft committee was proud that after putting "blood, sweat and tears” into making the arena the best it could be, it has a stellar reputation.

"Campdraft competitions are very popular at the moment,” Mrs Boatfield said.

The event relies on the contributions of volunteers and sponsors.

"Our sponsors want to be associated with a well-run event.

"We're grateful to all the sponsors who have wanted to provide something, whether it be cash or prizes towards the success of the event.”

The campdraft begins on Friday at 12noon and continues through Saturday and Sunday.

Spectators enter free for all events, and on Friday night a feature bullride starts at 5pm.

Results for all campdraft events will be posted on Stanthorpe Campdraft's Facebook page next week. Organisers aim to provide live updates throughout the weekend at campdraftcentral.com.au, but if the internet connection prevents this, results will be posted over the weekend and will update once the connection is strong.
