Apline bells ring out on Granite Belt
GRANITE Belt Cheese Co at Severnlea is now Australian distributor for Varrone Alpine Bells from Premana in Northern Italy. The village of Premana has been famous for making bells and cutlery for over 100 years.
The Varrone Alpine Bells from Premana produce eight types of bell with various sizes in each range.
There are different bells for different animals and each herd would have different size bells and a different sound from the size of the bell. Traditionally the shepherds would have small bells for the young animals and females different size bell to males. During the summer grazing months in the Alps the shepherds could find the herd, by the bell's tone and depth.
The bells are handmade and produced from high quality carbon steel and coated to prevent rust. The clappers are also different for each bell and therefore give a clear alpine sound.
The range of eight bell types are named after surrounding Alpine regions.
The range includes Premana, Chamonix, Brescia, Piemonte, Valsassina and Cortina.
The smallest bell in the Premana range of hand made bells is 70mm high and weighs 100g.
Whilst in the same Premana range the largest size is 300mm high and weighs 6.9kg for a prize bull.
In the Chamonix range the smallest bell is 25mm high and weighs 4g. This bell is perfect for cats or teddy bears.
The Varrone Alpine Bells are suitable for cows, goats, sheep, horses, dogs as pets and others are for hunting dogs, donkeys, cats and teddy bears.
