Anti-porn billboard lights up busy CBD intersection

A TOOWOOMBA anti-porn group has placed a billboard on one of the city's busiest intersections.

A City Free From Porn's new digital billboard has been up on the corner of Ruthven and Margaret Sts since early January, with the slogan "Porn fuels sexual harassment #metoo."

The group said that slogan was chosen due to the 2017 social media campaign #metoo which generated more than 12 million posts from women sharing their stories of sexual harassment.

"A 2015 meta-analysis of 22 studies from seven countries found that internationally the consumption of pornography was significantly associated with increases in verbal and physical aggression, among males and females alike. If we want an end to Sexual harassment, we need to put an end to that which fuels it," the group said.

It comes after the organisation said it was working on big plans for an advertisement in the city in December, after an unnamed city bus company declined its offer to advertise on its fleet.

With thousands of cars travelling through the CBD intersection daily, the message is sure to reach many Toowoomba residents.

Already people are sharing their thoughts on the new billboard, with many people against the anti-porn message, while others agree with it.

Penelope McCowen said: "So good to see some truths around this issue up in lights."

Aimee Dowling wasn't happy with the placing of the advertisement: "How is this a good thing. When I drive past with my children in the car, and get stopped at lights my 8 yr old daughter will read this and immediately ask "What's porn?"

What do you think?

Do you want Toowoomba to be a city free from porn?
