All style with celebrations of debut anew
THIS year is a momentous year for Christine Anu as she celebrates the 20th anniversary of her debut album Stylin Up.
To celebrate her career Anu has announced special appearances around the country.
In a two-hour show in Toowoomba last night Anu performed the songs that drew in fans from around the globe and cemented her place as an iconic Australian performer.
"So far the tour has received fantastic feedback, it has all been really positive," Anu said.
"Everyone seems to be as happy as I am.
"I am celebrating the past 20 years and everyone who has followed my journey is able to celebrate with me.
"This 20th anniversary is an opportunity to re-live and perform the songs from Stylin Up again and I can't wait to spend the whole year performing them to audiences across the country."
Toowoomba residents were entertained by hit songs such as Island Home, Party, Monkey and the Turtle and Wanem Time as well as the full range of songs from the album that started it all.
Stylin Up was released by Mushroom Music in 1995 and set Australian music lovers alive.
At the time it was one of the most influential albums released by an indigenous artist, featuring a unique blend of Anu's culturally diverse musical styles.
Anu said she could not believe it had been 20 years since she released her first album.
"In many ways it seems like a long time ago but also the blink of an eye," she said.
"So many wonderful things happened because of the success of that album and the wonderful songs that appear on it.
"I am enormously proud of My Island Home and the special place it holds in the Australian songbook."
Christine Anu plays the Brisbane Powerhouse Theatre on July 24. For more information on the tour and to buy tickets visit www.christineanu.com.au.
