Nananananananana... Affleck! Argo actor cast as new Batman

ACADEMY Award winner Ben Affleck has answered the Batsignal.

The 41-year-old has today been announced as the new Batman to star opposite Henry Cavill in the currently untitled Man Of Steel sequel, set to open in 2015.

"We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some," WB's president of production Greg Silverman told The Wrap.

"His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character."

Zack Snyder, who directed MOS and will direct its sequel, said Affleck would provide an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman.

"He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him," Snyder said.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who started in last Batman flick The Dark Knight Rises, was the favourite to take up the mantle last month according to sportsbet.com.au.

Gordon-Levitt ($4) was followed by Ryan Gosling ($11), Chris Pine ($11) and Jake Gyllenhaal ($12).

Christian Bale, who portrayed Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Christopher Nolan directed trilogy between 2005 and 2012, was reportedly offered $50 million to reprise his role in the MOS sequel.

MOS took in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office.
