'His guts are hanging out': Jury hears triple-0 recording

"I STABBED me best mate… his guts are hanging out."

Those are the chilling words a jury heard when it was played a recording of a triple-0 call that Paul Gathercole allegedly made while a Coffs Harbour man lay on the ground.

Robbie Joseph Charles, 32, was killed on February 1, 2014, outside his unit at Heron Ave on the Gold Coast.

His flatmate, Paul Gathercole, 42, has been charged with his murder.

On Thursday, the second day of Mr Gathercole's trial, the jury heard evidence from neighbours who rushed to help while Mr Charles lay motionless outside the unit.

The jury was also played a recording of when Mr Gathercole allegedly called triple-0.

Mr Gathercole could be heard saying he had stabbed his best mate and urged them to hurry sending an ambulance.

When the call operator asked if the man was seriously bleeding, he responded saying, "yes, his guts are hanging out" and repeated this statement.

Towards the end of the call the jury heard the police arriving and arresting him.

It is alleged Mr Charles, his partner Vanessa Heath and Mr Gathercole attended a function earlier that day and headed to Nobby's Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

It is believed they had all been drinking.

Neighbours who gave evidence on Thursday described how they heard a woman screaming from outside the unit and called for help.
