A new fire breaks out on Sunday night

THE message from the fire front in the Stanthorpe and Applethorpe area has been consistent all day - the fire is burning within containment lines.

Many residents evacuated on Friday or Saturday are now able to return home with a few exceptions.

The latest update at 8.45pm Sunday confirmed that the main vegetation fire was still burning within containment lines.

There was one small outbreak on Sunday night with one fire unit despatched to a vegetation fire at Amosfield Rd and Dalcouth Rd, Stanthorpe, at 8pm.

In the main fire area, firefighters continue to strengthen containment lines with efforts focused on Ellwood Road, Kelly Road, Allen Lane and into the Broadwater State Forest.

Crews will continue to consolidate containment lines throughout the entire burn area overnight Sunday. Local residents may see an increase in smoke as a result.

Crews continue to conduct ongoing patrols to the west of the New England Highway, including at Plant Lane, McGrath Lane, Caves Road, Amiens Road and in the general areas around Happy Valley and Stanthorpe.

An exclusion zone remains in place and is bounded by the following areas:

. Ellwood Road, Kelly Road and Allen Lane in the north

. The New England Highway in the east, with the exception of Spiller Lane, Roessler Avenue, Ann Street and Sofia Lane

. Amiens Road and McGrath Lane in the south

. Plant Lane in the west

All other residents are now able to return home.

After 8pm, one fire unit was despatched to a vegetation fire at Amosfield Rd and Dalcouth Rd, Stanthorpe.
