Why Jarrod Bleijie had a rat on his shoulder

POLICE cleared Bill Byrne of any wrongdoing but the Queensland Opposition has taken aim at the Rockhampton MP's admission he shot rats in his ceiling cavity.

The Opposition asked three questions about Mr Byrne's admission he shot rats in his Rockhampton home in the 1990s.

Kawana MP Jarrod Bleijie started the LNP's attack, placing a white toy rat on this shoulder, and asking if Mr Byrne had followed through on a promise to access his army records through a right to information request.

"In this Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month I refer to the Minister for Police's statement as a minister regarding his rat-shooting rampage and claims that he would lodge an RTI application with the Australian Defence Force for all records during his time in the military and I ask: has the minister lodged this RTI, on what date and what information did he request?" he said.

Speaker Peter Wellington ruled his question was out of order because of the toy rat - with props banned in parliament.

Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson followed up the question asking if Mr Byrne would publicly release the statement he made to police.

Mr Byrne said he had already commented on the allegations and had been cleared after a police investigation.

"It has been fully investigated by the Police Service. I am very comfortable, of course, in the result - as I should be, because I had no case to answer, as those opposite would know if they had read the regulations in the first place. I have nothing further to offer," he told the parliament

Indooroopilly MP Scott Emerson then asked Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk if she would publicly release Mr Byrne's military records when they were available.

Ms Palaszczuk said police had cleared Mr Byrne of any wrongdoing through a police investigation.

A spokeswomen for Mr Byrne told ARM Newsdesk the minister had previously commented on the shooting and had nothing further to add.
