Sisters to compete in equestrian

THE Charlton sisters from Stanthorpe have a home away from home at the Warwick Showgrounds in the next four days at the Queensland Inter-school Equestrian Championships.

Ellie Charlton, 14, and her sister Kasey, 12, travel by bus to school each day at The Scots PGC College where they are part of the equestrian program under coach Richard King.

Their horses Billy and Ace don’t “board” at the college but are transported to Warwick for each of the girl’s lessons.

They are two of 300 riders in Warwick for the four-day championships starting today.

The sisters were two of 12 Scots PGC students who competed in the inter-school championships in eventing last weekend at Morgan Park.

Kasey was 14th in the preliminary class and Ellie 15th in introductory.

Their best equestrian discipline is showjumping, which is on Sunday, the last day of this week’s championships.

Ellie’s main aim at the championships is to go clear in showjumping. Times are used to split all riders with clear rounds.

“I would love to finish in the top 10,” Ellie said.

Kasey represented Queensland last year in the nationals after finishing fourth at the Queensland championships and wants a top-five finish this year.

“Four qualify for the nationals and the fifth placegetter is a reserve,” Kasey said.

“We will volunteer at the championships this week and do whatever jobs they need us to do.”

While both are only showjumping this year, Ellie plans to ride a different horse Will in dressage qualifiers next year with the aim of having two events at the championships.

As for Kasey, she just wants to concentrate on showjumping during the next year.
