QLD woman stuck in Nepal after runway blocked by crash

A QUEENSLAND woman's trip of a lifetime has turned into an unforgettable nightmare in Kathmandu.

Scarlett Hrlec, 22, was yesterday desperately trying to leave Nepal's only airport where more than 24,000 travellers have been stranded since Wednesday when an airplane skidded off the tarmac, blocking the only runway.

Brisbane's Kimberley Hrlec said her daughter arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport after sickness forced her to abandon plans to take on the arduous 17,000-foot Mt Everest Base Camp hike.

Mrs Hrlec, 54, and her husband Alan, 53, have been unable to contact their daughter since late Saturday.

"She had a really bad chest infection, so she decided to turn back from the trek," the small business owner said.

"She's been stuck there (at the airport) since March 4."

Mrs Hrlec said Scarlett was booked on an Air India flight but she had no idea if she was on board.

"There was a flight booked for 10am this morning (Sunday) but because she doesn't have a sim card I can't contact her to find out if she will get on it," she said.

"It's absolutely driving me crazy not being able to talk to her."

The airport re-opened on Saturday but a back-log of flights meant passengers were still waiting to take-off late yesterday.

The Turkish Airbus A-330 came to grief in heavy rain and fog.

There were no serious injuries among the 224 passengers and 11 crew members onboard.

Hundreds of flights were delayed as technicians waited on the arrival of equipment to remove the jet.
