Operator starts campaign to oust unsafe tourist businesses
ONE local tourism operator is calling for a fair go and wants others to join his campaign to eradicate illegal and unsafe tourist accommodation operators.
The tourism operator, who wishes to remain anonymous, said being undercut by dodgy business dealings was affecting his livelihood.
"I am aware of foreign nationals creating multiple sites with multiple people in each," he said.
"There is one guy who comes in every season and rents out several houses and has 20 people in each.
"It is unfair to those of us doing things legally, but it is also a health and safety concern for the people living there.
"We don't want foreign nationals coming in and exploiting the season, because this is our bread and butter."
He added most tourism operators were able to match the price of the overcrowded houses and offer a better living experience at the same time.
The Southern Downs Regional Council will give a backpacker and fruit picker accommodation talk at a Growcom seminar on November 19 at the Applethorpe DPI.
Should there be more of a public campaign to get this accommodation out of the Granite Belt? Do you have an overcrowded house to dob in? Let us know by emailing editor@borderpost.com.au.
