Labor promises federal mining hub in Brisbane

A FEDERAL hub for the mining industry will have its headquarters in Brisbane if Prime Minister Kevin Rudd can hold on to power beyond this weekend.

The goal is to boost the now cooling sectors, which pumped $90 billion into the Australian economy

The centre will help promote Australian firms and products to international markets.

Mr Rudd said the new Mining Equipment, Technology and Services partnership would include Austmine, the CSIRO, Centre for Mining Technology and Economic Development and Australian Industry Group.

Queensland University of Technology and Curtin University would also be involved.

The government will spend $16 million on the project in 2016-17, which is already allocated in the budget.

Industry and researchers are to match every dollar.
