Denmark orienteering championships

LILIAN Burrill will celebrate her 18th birthday with Australian team-mates tomorrow as she prepares for the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Denmark.

For the second successive year, the Warwick State High School 2009 graduate has made the Australian team for world championships in Europe.

She has been fine tuning her form at a training camp near Aalborg.

The Australian team is hoping to meet Princess Mary of Denmark who is a regular at orienteering competitions.

Yesterday, Lilian’s sister Alison said an email to the family had a lot about Denmark and not so much about the championships.

“Lilian has been working three part-time jobs to make it to the championships,” Alison said.

She has won a Doc Bodimeade Memorial Encouragement Award in the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Month awards for the past two years.

She put off going to university this year to concentrate on sport.

Competition for the 301 orienteers from 36 countries starts on Monday with a sprint distance race.

There is a long distance race on Tuesday, the middle distance events on Thursday and Friday and a relay day on Saturday.
