Bikies among 11 in court on raft of drug charges

IT was standing room only at the bar table in Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday when serious drug matters against 11 people were mentioned.

The table was not filled with defendants, but instead with their suited lawyers, who were there to find out the next hearing date for their respective clients.

Police will allege two of the 11 defendants, Darren Wayne Donaldson, 32, and Jason Mark Sloan, 43, were participants in the Life and Death Motorcycle Club when they were charged on May 22.

The group's charges were the result of an operation targeting criminal motorcycle gangs.

Properties in Hodgson Vale, Kleinton, Pittsworth, Toowoomba and Helidon Spa were among the 30 across southern Queensland raided in the operation.

Police allege amphetamines, cannabis, steroids, cash and a handgun were recovered in the raids.

It was carried out by officers from what was then known as Taskforce Hydra as well as Charleville and Toowoomba criminal investigation branches.

Donaldson and Sloan faced charges including trafficking, possessing and supplying dangerous drugs.

The cases of Te Wakaiti Meremere Blake, 30, Sandra Louise Giddins, 47, Joseph Scott Grungo, 42, Ashley Wayne Heit, 31, Dean Michael Heit, 24, Robert Shane Krause, 38, Mark Anthony Manns, 35, Dale Gordon Pettman, 37, were also mentioned.

Each one of them has been charged with at least one count of trafficking dangerous drugs.

Lesser charges of supplying and possessing dangerous drugs were mentioned against Leonie Maree Kenzig, 48.

Defence lawyer Phil Stainton, who appeared on behalf of Donaldson, said he had received the police brief of evidence last Friday and requested an adjournment so the material could be perused.

Magistrate Bruce Shemioneck adjourned the case for mention in the same court on March 11, 2014.
