300-person street fight forces police to call for backup

POLICE have charged a number of people following a large disturbance at Mount Isa this morning.

At around 4.25am police responded to reports of approximately 300 people fighting and damaging property in the vicinity of Gardner and Able Smith Parade, Mount Isa.

First response officers had to call in additional resources to help disperse the large crowd.

It will be alleged that amongst the large group, smaller groups were fighting amongst themselves, damaging fences and using star pickets and bottles during the melee.

A woman was charged with serious assault after allegedly being in possession of a knife and head-butting a female officer. 

The police officer was not injured.

There were no serious injuries reported.

Fourteen other people have been charged on numerous street offences are to appear at later dates.

Investigations are continuing and further charges are expected.
