IF ANYONE in town has the inside word on whether gun halfback Daly Cherry-Evans will play for the Maroons tomorrow night, it's his grandfather Jim Cherry.

But not even Mr Cherry could be certain.

"I spoke to Daly last week and he was pretty doubtful," he said.

Mr Cherry moved to Stanthorpe from Redcliffe four years ago.

A former rugby league player, Mr Cherry is the father of Cherry-Evans' mother Kellie.

He said his grandson showed special talent from an early age.

"He used to practise in the paddock - silly passes, kicks and so on," he said.

Now a Manly, Maroons and Australian representative, Cherry-Evans still carries those down-to-earth qualities.

"He loves playing a few pranks and is a bit of a larrikin," Mr Cherry said.

"He is just an ideal kid."

Mr Cherry keenly follows his grandson's career, and said his proudest moment was not Cherry-Evans' NRL debut or State of Origin success.

"It was watching him run on for Australia for the first time in 2011," Mr Cherry said.
